Winter is almost upon us, and with it comes colder weather, greyer skies and fewer daylight hours. The season offers less than optimal gardening conditions, however there is a way to get your gardening fix without having to worry about developing frostbite. The solution is… indoor plants! So, if you’re looking to add some greenery to your indoor space this winter, read our article below about indoor plants that can withstand the cold.
1. Aloe Vera
When it comes to indoor plants that require little maintenance during winter, aloe vera is right up there. This succulent doesn’t require a lot of watering as it can store water in its leaves, however it does need bright sunlight to thrive.
2. Snake plant
Another low maintenance indoor plant is the snake plant. This hardy plant with its sword-shaped leaves not only looks great, but it can survive most indoor conditions and is also believed to improve air quality. It only needs to be watered occasionally, it rarely requires re-potting and it can tolerate bright indirect sunlight as well as partial shade.
3. Phalaenopsis orchid
The Phalaenopsis orchid (or moth orchid) is another plant that is relatively easy to look after and capable of surviving the winter months. This single stem plant is often grown indoors and enjoys comfortable temperatures. So, if you keep your house nice and toasty during winter, this could be the plant for you! Whilst moth orchids do enjoy plenty of light, be mindful that direct sunlight can damage their leaves.
4. Jade plant
Jade plants are troopers in that they are tolerant of varying temperatures and only need to be watered every three to four weeks in winter. They have vibrant green leaves and some people
believe that positioning these plants at the entrance your of home invites positive energy and prosperity into the space.
5. ZZ Plant
The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is a great choice for winter because it can tolerate dry air as well as either bright light or low-light conditions. It has green glossy leaves and grows well in less-than-optimal conditions. Average room temperatures of anywhere between 15 and 24°C work well, and less is generally more when it comes to watering this plant during the cooler months. However, avoid exposing the ZZ plant to direct sunlight where you can.
In addition to looking great, studies have shown that indoor plants can offer a range of health benefits. It has been found that they may aid recovery, boost your productivity, reduce stress levels and even remove toxins and pollutants from the air. So, why not do some research and work out which indoor plants might work best in your home this winter.
