Australia once again takes the crown with Melbourne ranked as the most liveable city in the world. This would be a big enough result on its own but what’s even more staggering is the fact that Melbourne has now taken the top honour for seven consecutive years!
While Melbourne scored maximum points in education, healthcare and infrastructure it’s the latter that interests us the most. As part of this section, availability of good quality housing, public transport and road networks make up a large chunk. It’s an important element to note because even more significantly just a month earlier Melbourne was also crowned Australia’s hottest housing market.
Melbourne overtook Sydney this year as the hottest housing market in the country and now it can claim to again be the most liveable city in the world. What impact this might have on the market in Australia we’re still to find out but it’s an ominous sign.
Melbournite’s weren’t the only Aussie city to score big with their housing market either. Perth came in as the 7th most liveable city in the world but importantly scored just as high as Melbourne for its infrastructure and availability of quality housing. Perth slid from 4th in 2006 to its lowest ranking of 9th in 2012, 2013 and 2014. If the trends we’re seeing continue, Perth may challenge to fit into the top 5 cities again soon.
Adelaide rounds out Australia’s representatives in the top 10 as the equal 5th most liveable city in the world, sharing the spot with Calgary, Canada.
Sydney is the noticeable omission from this years top 10, slipping to 11th in 2017. The Sydney/Melbourne rivalry is spicing up with this announcement, even getting some traction on Twitter.

Thanks @cityofsydney that's so kind. We don't really have time to listen to playlists, we prefer live music. https://t.co/oFaQmcLgZK

So the question to all Aussies is now: What do you think is the most liveable city in Australia?
