How to get your outside space BBQ friendly and ready for summer

The frangipanis are peeking out, glasses are clinking, and the smell of sausages is in the air. Summer is on her way – and she simply refuses to be cancelled or diverted to zoom. It’s time to gather round your family and friends and crank up that barbie. But if you’re feeling like your outside space isn’t quite ready for launch day just yet – here’s how.

Prepare the view

With a long warm summer ahead, eating outside is firmly back on the agenda. Avoid looking out over brown, dry patches of grass by fertilising and weeding the lawn as soon as the weather starts to warm up. Watch out for any bindis that may have taken hold over the winter months. Keep the grass regularly mowed – but do allow for some length to remain, as this protects and shades the soil. For a fresh green lawn, you don’t need to water too often. Surprisingly, the soil responds much better with more infrequent but deeper watering sessions.

Space to relax

Now that you have a pleasant view, make sure you have somewhere comfortable to sit and admire it. Soft seating is always pleasant for the summer season and having a dining table really extends the useable space in your property. Stay nice and cool with a large umbrella for shade and think about including some soft furnishing additions such as cushions and candles that can really make the outside feel like part of your home.

Pest control

While cockroaches do unfortunately come with the Aussie territory, it’s never pleasant to get an unexpected side order with your steak. Spring is the classic season for rising numbers, and a good time to spray your home. The treatment has less work to do and can take much better effect.
