4 home maintenance projects to tackle this autumn

Like an annual health check-up, your home also needs a regular once over to make sure everything is in working order. And with the summer heat cooling off, autumn is the perfect time to get stuck into those projects and prepare for the season ahead.

Here’s everything you need to know about home maintenance this autumn.

1. Check your heating

Aussie winters can be rather chilly! It’s definitely worthwhile checking that the heating system is up and running before you really need it.

Listen out for strange noises or behaviours – any hissing, groaning, or poor performance is a sign that it needs some seasonal attention.

2. Protect your furniture

Outdoor furniture is great in summer – but leaving it out in all weather is taking an expensive risk.

If you don’t have a covered area to protect it, invest in some sturdy outdoor furniture covers. In the off-season, it’s a good idea to bring your cushions and pillows inside until the weather improves.

3. Clean out the gutters

Gutters are a magic forcefield that cleverly diverts rainwater away from your home. They protect your paintwork and surfaces from leaks, rusting and water damage. But they do get clogged up with leaves, stray branches and storm debris – and they won’t clean themselves.

If you’re not comfortable with this home maintenance task, contact a tradie to help out.

You might also want to consider investing in a mesh guard that will help capture the mess, but let the water run freely underneath.

4. Seal up the gaps

Rattling windows and doors are a telling sign that there is some sneaky cold air wafting in. As the weather cools down, this can really make a difference to your home comfort – as well as your energy bills.

Use draft-stoppers to block the bottom of doors and think about weather stripping, to seal up any gaps. It comes in a variety of easy use materials and is widely available.
