Winter decor colour trends for 2021

Ready to redecorate your home? After checking out some key interior design rules so you know how to avoid common DIY design mistakes, it makes sense to research which colours are in style and would be appealing to buyers if you need to sell.

Aesthetic trends are currently undergoing a shift from the grey and white of the past few years. Take a look at popular colour palettes in 2021:

1. Warm colours

After the disruption of 2020, we are turning to warm, earthy colours. Rusty tones, charcoal, warm browns and terracotta hues are the go, to create calm and relaxed spaces this winter. It’s also all about nature so look for natural tones and neutral colours when painting larger spaces.

2. White is out

For a few years now, white walls have been super trendy, along with Scandinavian inspired design. If you prefer something less stark, you’ll be pleased to know white is on the way out. Bring back the intrigue of different shades to create a more contemporary feel.

3. All about nature

Being trapped indoors for a good portion of last year has inspired trendsetters to bring nature to us. This coming season will be all about nature. Timber is ‘hot’ going into winter, as are patterns and designs that are based on the elements. You’ll see curves instead of straight lines, even for doorways and windows, as part of the latest interior design trends.

4. There is still room for boldness

Despite the move towards a natural and neutral colour palette, there is still room for bold pieces. Patterned upholstery is a good way to add some flair to a neutral room, as are large, bold works of art. For wall art, bold but simple line drawings are perfect conversation starters. Florals and herringbone patterns have also been making a splash on upholstery in a call back to styles from the 70s and 80s.

If you’re nervous about going bold with colour, stick to neutrals on walls and larger pieces of furniture. Bring some flair through texture rather than contrasting patterns to bring a point of difference to your home.
